The locations are beautiful, but I spend most of my days running up and down the hill pulling out splinters, stopping bloody noses, handing out my ever present 'sting stick' for the bazillions of mozzie bites and persuading the thousandth kid of the day complaining of stomach pains and headache to DRINK THEIR WATER! I have gotten REALLY good at finding stopping points to catch my breath - um, I mean to 'urge' the kids on to where they need to go, but this year it will be different.
There is a HUGE hill behind the hospital and I decided that I am going to start climbing it! Friday morning at 4:45 am (yup... o' dark thirty), Mai Munemo and I made our maiden trek. The sun wasn't even up yet so with torches in hand we headed past the staff housing and started our climb. Mai Munemo led the way and after passing the mission's water storage tanks (which I had never seen before), had a snake scare, mistook stars for lights, and me doing a lot of huffing and puffing, we made it to the top! After waking up the Chinese workmen, losing our path back down, holding on to every tree branch we could find to keep from sliding down the hill on our behinds, being very mindful that it was tree we were grabbing on to and not a boomslang (snake), we made it back down just as the sun was rising. Next time I am bringing Maputi with me, he could use the trek to help get all his wiggles out and I will feel better that he's on snake alarm duty! :o)
We have a schedule worked out and hopefully, when I get to camp, I won't need all those rest stops!

I guess that this is one way to level out a hill!
